Types of Glass Clips and Their Functions
Choosing the right type of glass clip depends on your greenhouse frame, panel thickness, and the glazing method used. Here are the most common options:
- W-Clips: These are widely used to hold glass panes against aluminium or steel frames. Their shape allows a firm grip while still providing some flexibility to accommodate temperature changes and vibration. They’re ideal for main vertical panes and roof glazing.
- Z-Clips: Designed to support overlapping glass sheets on the roof or where double-glazing is used. They ensure the upper pane sits correctly over the lower one, creating a weatherproof seal.
- Spring Wire Clips (a.k.a. ‘S’ clips): These clips use spring tension to keep glass in place and are especially helpful in windy or exposed areas. Their tight grip helps prevent rattling or slippage.
- Cropping Clips / Lap Clips: Used where two panes overlap vertically, commonly found in traditional horticultural greenhouses.
- Glazing Strip + Clip Combinations: Some greenhouses use rubber glazing strips alongside clips for added insulation and to cushion the glass.
Not all greenhouses use the same system, so it’s essential to match the clip type to your greenhouse brand or check the frame profile if you're unsure. Many manufacturers offer specific clips that correspond to their glazing systems. If your greenhouse is from a known brand like Halls, Vitavia, Eden, or Palram, it’s best to refer to their fitting guides or use original parts to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.
When and Why to Replace Glass Clips
Glass clips should be inspected regularly, especially after storms, heavy snowfall, or strong winds. Even a single missing or rusted clip can compromise the structural integrity of your greenhouse. Over time, metal clips may weaken or corrode, reducing their grip, while plastic clips can become brittle due to UV exposure or fluctuating temperatures. Regular replacement is a simple and affordable maintenance task that can prevent more serious and costly damage later on.
You should consider replacing the clips if you notice rattling or movement in the panes, discover rust, cracks, or bent clips during inspection, or if you're replacing a glass pane or resealing part of the greenhouse. It’s also a smart move when winter-proofing your greenhouse to ensure maximum insulation and resistance to the elements.
If you're upgrading to thicker glass or polycarbonate panels, replacing or upgrading your clips is essential, as not all clips are suited for every glazing material. Make sure the clips you choose are rated for the appropriate thickness. Keeping a spare set of clips on hand is highly recommended, especially before storm season or any major weather changes.
Installing new clips is generally a straightforward process that requires no special tools. Most clip types can be pressed into place by hand, though it’s a good idea to wear gloves when working close to sharp glass edges to avoid injury.
